Authentication is not exclusively about stopping spam, the value may
well prove to be elsewhere. The domains of the major public mailbox
providers will not get a free pass past the content filters because
every man and his dog can get a mailbox there, their reputation will
be neutral to mediocre unless they are able to a substantially better
job of filtering their output.
