*hmm*....but I do have that (smtpd_reject_unlisted_sender = yes ) in my
main.cf which is part of why I am puzzled....so I thought perhaps I had
a conflict that might be canceling that setting.
I suddenly have a funeral to attend out of town and won't have access to
this machine for nearly a week so I'll keep reading and hope I've become
more enlightened when I get back. Thanks again for the help.

* As of Postfix version 2.1, the SMTP server also rejects unknown sender
addresses (i.e. addresses that it would reject as unknown recipient
addresses). Sender "egress filtering" can help to slow down an email
worm explosion. This is controlled by the smtpd_reject_unlisted_sender
configuration parameter.

the "keyword" above links to:
http://www.postfix.org/postconf.5.html#smtpd_reject_unlisted_sender
An alternative is to use reject_unlisted_sender in smtpd restrictions.
PS. don't top post
