Thanks Wietse,
I have spent some time with the docs, and one I got SASL
playing nicely (on Gentoo). SMTP AUTH seems to work.
Unfortunately I now find my phone doesn't want to send a
username/password combination but seems to thing logging into the imap
server first is good enough!
