Aliases and command pipes

Everything I've read leads me to believe that postfix can handle
piping of mail to a command using aliases.
However, when I set it up instead of just trying to pipe to the
command I get an error message back.
For example if I have:
test: /bin/test.pl
I see that it tries to send mail to:
|/bin/test.pl
<mailserver hostname>
Is there a config option or something I'm missing?
Thanks,
