Actually it went back much further than that. I don't specifically
remember versions, but I was using Dovecot SASL via Timo's patch long
before Postfix snapshot 20051221, which officially added the Dovecot
support.
I do know that the 0.99's and "1.0-stable" versions, whose development
was long ago abandoned, do not provide the SASL functionality. Many OS
distributions still use the 0.99's, so this will be an issue for some
time to come.
