The main advantage is that most ISP's are not blocking outbound
submission, whereas an increasing number of them are blocking smtp.
Users at such places will not be able to authenticate and send through
you unless you provide a service on a port they can reach.

I would think it no more dangerous, and probably less so, than opening
port 25.

Probably because AUTH is not enabled by default. You have to read
SASL_README and do some work before you have AUTH.
