didn't think so, *snicker*.

didn't have any pristine media, but debsums failed 'cleanup', and
reinstalling from the repository solved the problem. i don't know
what changed that file; the system hasn't been hacked -- maybe a
single-bit disk error or something like that.
anyway; thanks for pointing me right at the problem; this hadn't
occurred to me at all.
