I agree with Sandy here. Don't use "stopgap" measures on production
systems. You'll spend every waking moment supporting the stopgap
measure and never have time to get the "proper" system in place. The
time it takes to set up TSL and SASLAUTH is far less than you'll
waste implementing POP-before-SMTP and then telling people how it's
supposed to work.
