Hi all,
I've been using Postfix/Debian (stable)for 4 years now without issue,
until around the time of the Debian 4 update (to Postfix 2.3.8)...
The problem - for no reason I can see, all local mail gets deferred with
unknown transport error(log below).
The problem remains until I reboot the server (I've tried restarting all
the processes and that doesn't work, and they do definitely stop)
Has anyone else seen anything like this (in postfix or otherwise?) - I
suspect there's some socket issues maybe but the logs don't give a whole
lot of clues. (done verbose logging too, which doesn't show any errors)
thanks in advance,
Jim Potter

(see last log entry- )I am wondering - 5419 is a user that has left - his
user details have been removed but his mailbox is still there - will this
cause problems?
Sample bouncede message:
Jul 3 06:34:58 mars postfix/qmgr[5162]: 133B5C0612B:
to=<5559
brislington.bristol.sch.uk>, relay=none, delay=0.17,
delays=0.1/0.06/0/0, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (unknown mail transport
error)
I've followed the advice in the docs, looking for fatal/warning/panics -
there's lots, all like this:
Jul 2 19:19:22 mars postfix/smtpd[17520]: warning: premature end-of-input
on private/proxymap socket while reading input attribute name
Jul 2 19:19:22 mars postfix/master[5155]: warning: process
/usr/lib/postfix/proxymap pid 15328 killed by signal 6
Jul 2 19:19:55 mars postfix/qmgr[5162]: warning: premature end-of-input
on private/local socket while reading input attribute name
Jul 2 19:19:55 mars postfix/qmgr[5162]: warning: private/local socket:
malformed response
Jul 2 19:19:55 mars postfix/qmgr[5162]: warning: transport local failure
-- see a previous warning/fatal/panic logfile record for the problem
description
Going back further I identified the first deferred email:
Jul 2 19:19:55 mars postfix/qmgr[5162]: warning: premature end-of-input
on private/local socket while reading input attribute name
Jul 2 19:19:55 mars postfix/qmgr[5162]: warning: private/local socket:
malformed response
Jul 2 19:19:55 mars postfix/qmgr[5162]: warning: transport local failure
-- see a previous warning/fatal/panic logfile record for the problem
description
Between that and the last delivered emails there are a flurry of
mis-addressed emails:
Jul 2 19:19:12 mars postfix/smtpd[17124]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from
