Spiking CPU load and the virtual delivery agent.

I'm having some problems with the load on my mailserver periodically
spiking to 40 or 50. Top shows a bunch (say, 12-16) of "virtual" processes
spinning, but not doing anything obvious -- mail delivery appears to be
steady, at least according to maillog.

The setup is postfix on freebsd, using mysql-backed virtual delivery. It
also has dovecot and squirrelmail sharing the same mysql database. When
the load average spikes the connection count on mysql hovers around 250,
but max connections is set to 500, the process list shows all the
connections are sleeping, and the slow query log shows nothing.

Given a few minutes it works itself out, but mail delivery etc. times out
in the meantime.

Does anyone have insight on what might be causing this?
