did you try amavisd-nanny ? did you enable debugging on amavis ? did you
check the subdirs under amavisd's spool dir ? Did you telnet to port
10024 to get the amavisd response ?

How can you be so sure that amavisd is not the culprit ? , It is a fine
product but a huge resource hog !
