Thanks Bill & Ralf. I'm replying to both in one, since they are obviously on
the same track.

Host david.lydgate.lan not found: 2(SERVFAIL)

which supports the theory, however....

/etc/hosts contains the line
192.168.0.70 david.lydgate.lan

and I can ping by name:

ping david.lydgate.lan
PING david.lydgate.lan (192.168.0.70) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from david.lydgate.lan (192.168.0.70): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.87 ms

Where does that leave me? I can't think what else to check.
