Debian-based systems often have elaborate wrappers around services. The
goal was originally to provide an administration interface that
conformed to the "Debian way", but I always found that the consistency
and intuitiveness could vary wildly, even if reliability is pretty good
once you learn the system. Unfortunately, this sometimes creates some
significant deviations from upstream documentation and common practices,
enough to prevent the original developers from being able to help. Your
best bet is to ask in a Ubuntu or Debian forum, if this is the case.
