    Greetings,

The SANS Network Security 2002 planning committee has been hard at work
for the past month trying to put together a great national conference
and vendor exhibition. As I pore over every detail I can't help being
overcome by an enormous sense of gratitude. SANS and GIAC are not
perfect, but the combination is the very best training and certification
in information security in the world and there is no competition that
has anything close in terms of depth and breadth. This extraordinary
achievement was accomplished, as each of you know, by the defensive
information community working together. This community is made up of
the research projects leading to consensus books, the subject area
experts that contributed slides, or advanced concepts, and the students
that certified, became advisory board members and are helping other
students today. Your knowledge and sense of community has created a
powerful force for good. The tracks continue to become more polished,
more of them are moving to hands on, including new workshops and we are
continuing to increase the technical level of the material. Those who
attack our networks have called us "lamers" and have done their damage
with almost no fear. However, they are no longer as dominant as they
were even a year ago. If you read newsbytes, then you are aware of the
increasing number of court cases, both civil and criminal, being won by
the good guys and gals. That can be largely attributed to system,
network, and security administrators with a clue!

Even as we increase the technical level of the tracks and
certifications, we remain sensitive to the needs of people first
starting out in information security with the Basic Security Officer
program and the more challenging SANS Security Essentials. If you want
to truly hit the ground running, my advice to you is find a conference
where we are running Security Essentials Bootcamp. It will not be easy
and your brain will hurt for the next few weeks, but you will learn more
in eight days here in Washington, than you can learn in two years
    anywhere else.

The ID'Net provides a unique opportunity for you to see live attacks in
action as well as to watch the performance of intrusion detection
systems. The SANS at Night presentations will be our best ever.

The SANS teaching faculty are the best anywhere and each of our
instructors is a dedicated professional with in the trenches experience
that has the special gift of being able to deliver technical material
in an interesting and understandable manner.

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to SANS Network Security
2002. This is going to be a great conference and I hope to see you
    there!
