[sec-adv] Sun Solaris lpq privilege escalation

From: Secunia Security Advisories (sec-advsecunia.com)
Date: Tue Apr 01 2003 - 04:42:29 CST

TITLE:
Sun Solaris lpq privilege escalation

READ ONLINE:
http://www.secunia.com/advisories/8470/

CRITICAL:
Less critical

IMPACT:
Privilege escalation

WHERE:
Local system

OPERATING SYSTEM:
Sun Solaris 2.6
Sun Solaris 7

DESCRIPTION:
Sun Solaris has been found vulnerable to a privilege escalation
vulnerability in "lpq".

The problem is that "lpstat" doesn't verify the length of certain
data when operating in BSD mode (it runs in BSD mode when called via
"lpq"), lpstat is installed setuid "root". This can be exploited to
execute arbitrary code with "root" privileges.

SOLUTION:
Remove the setuid bit from "lpstat". This will render the command
useless for non-privileged users.

Reportedly Sun should have published an advisory today:

Patches:
Solaris 2.6 106235-12
Solaris 2.6_x86 106236-12
Solaris 7 107115-12
Solaris 7_x86 107116-12
