TITLE:
IPTables/Netfilter Denial of Service Vulnerabilities

READ ONLINE:
http://www.secunia.com/advisories/9429/

CRITICAL:
Moderately critical

IMPACT:
DoS

WHERE:
From remote

OPERATING SYSTEM:
Linux Kernel 2.5.x
Linux Kernel 2.4.x

DESCRIPTION:
Two vulnerabilities have been identified in IPTables/Netfilter, which
can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of
Service) on a vulnerable system.

The first vulnerability is caused due to an error when the system
performs NAT (Network Address Translation). Reportedly, this can in
some circumstances be exploited to cause the system to crash if the
modules "ip_nat_ftp" or "ip_nat_irc" has been loaded, or
"CONFIG_IP_NF_NAT_FTP" or "CONFIG_IP_NF_NAT_IRC" is enabled.

The vulnerability affects version 2.4.20 of the Linux kernel and
recent 2.5 kernels.

The second vulnerability is caused due to an error in the Connection
Tracking when handling "UNCONFIRMED" connections. Reportedly, this
can be exploited to cause the system to crash if the "ip_conntrack"
module is loaded or "CONFIG_IP_NF_CONNTRACK" is enabled.

This vulnerability only affects version 2.4.20 of the Linux kernel.

SOLUTION:
Update to kernel version 2.4.21:
http://www.kernel.org/

Development kernels should not be used in production environments.
