SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA10532

VERIFY ADVISORY:
http://www.secunia.com/advisories/10532/

CRITICAL:
Less critical

IMPACT:
Privilege escalation

WHERE:
Local system

OPERATING SYSTEM:
Linux Kernel 2.6.x
Linux Kernel 2.4.x
Linux Kernel 2.2.x

DESCRIPTION:
Paul Starzetz and Wojciech Purczynski have reported a vulnerability
in the Linux kernel, which can be exploited by malicious, local users
to escalate their privileges.

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error in the "mremap()"
system call. This may lead to the creation of a 0 bytes virtual
memory area (VMA), which disrupts kernel memory management.

Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code with
kernel level privileges.

The vulnerability has been reported in the 2.2, 2.4, and 2.6 series.

SOLUTION:
The vulnerability has been fixed in version 2.4.24.
