TITLE:
ArcInfo Workstation Format String and Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities
SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA15196
VERIFY ADVISORY:
http://secunia.com/advisories/15196/
CRITICAL:
Less critical
IMPACT:
Privilege escalation
WHERE:
Local system
SOFTWARE:
ArcInfo Workstation 9.x
http://secunia.com/product/5023/
DESCRIPTION:
Kevin Finisterre has reported some vulnerabilities in ArcInfo
Workstation, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain
escalated privileges.
1) A format string error in the "lockmgr" and "wservice" applications
can be exploited to execute arbitrary code with root privileges via a
specially crafted "ARCHOME" environment variable.
Successful exploitation requires that the ArcStorm or Geoprocessing
Server feature is enabled.
2) Some boundary errors in the handling of command line arguments in
the applications "asmaster", "asrecovery", "asuser", "asutility" and
"se" can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow via an overly long
command line argument.
Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code with
root privileges, but requires that the ArcStorm or Geoprocessing
Server feature is enabled.
The vulnerabilities have been reported in version 9.0 for UNIX. Other
versions may also be affected.
SOLUTION:
Remove any setuid bits set on applications in the "$ARCHOME/bin"
directory (see ESRI advisory).
Install patch (see ESRI advisory).
