DESCRIPTION:
CAU has reported multiple vulnerabilities in AIX, which can be
exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges.

1) A boundary error in invscout when processing command line
arguments can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow via an overly
long string (about 1024 bytes).

Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code with root
privileges.

The vulnerability affects AIX 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3.

2) A boundary error in diagTasksWebSM when processing command line
arguments can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow via an overly
long string.

Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code with root
privileges, but requires membership of the "system" group.

The vulnerability affects AIX 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3.

3) A boundary error in getlvname when processing command line
arguments can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow via an overly
long string.

Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code with root
privileges, but requires membership of the "system" group.

The vulnerability affects AIX 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3.

NOTE: Some other issues have also been reported. According to the
vendor, one has already been addressed in prior released APARs fixing
a similar vulnerability, another is not currently possible to confirm,
and the others are currently not believed to be exploitable.

SOLUTION:
The vendor recommends setting the file mode bits to "500" to ensure
that only root users can run the vulnerable programs.
