TITLE:
Utopia News Pro Cross-Site Scripting and SQL Injection

SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA17115

VERIFY ADVISORY:
http://secunia.com/advisories/17115/

CRITICAL:
Moderately critical

IMPACT:
Cross Site Scripting, Manipulation of data

WHERE:
From remote

SOFTWARE:
Utopia News Pro 1.x
http://secunia.com/product/5814/

DESCRIPTION:
rgod has discovered some vulnerabilities in Utopia News Pro, which
can be exploited by malicious people to conduct cross-site scripting
and SQL injection attacks.

1) Input passed to the "sitetitle" parameter in "header.php", and the
"version" and "query_count" parameters in "footer.php" isn't properly
sanitised before being returned to the user. This can be exploited to
execute arbitrary HTML and script code in a user's browser session in
context of an affected site.

Successful exploitation requires that "register_globals" is enabled.

The vulnerabilities have been confirmed in versions 1.1.3 and 1.1.4.
Other versions may also be affected.

2) Input passed to the "newsid" parameter in "news.php" isn't
properly sanitised before being used in a SQL query. This can be
exploited to manipulate SQL queries by injecting arbitrary SQL code.

Successful exploitation requires that "magic_quotes_gpc" is
disabled.

The vulnerability has been confirmed in version 1.1.3. Prior versions
may also be affected.

SOLUTION:
1) Edit the source code to ensure that input is properly sanitised.

Set "register_globals" to "Off".

2) Update to version 1.1.4.
