TITLE:
Pegasus Mail POP3 Error Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
SECUNIA ADVISORY ID:
SA37134
VERIFY ADVISORY:
http://secunia.com/advisories/37134/
DESCRIPTION:
Francis Provencher has discovered a vulnerability in Pegasus Mail,
which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's
system.
The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error in the processing
of POP3 responses. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer
overflow via an overly long error response.
Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code, but
requires that the user is tricked into connecting to a malicious POP3
server.
The vulnerability is confirmed in version 4.41. Other versions may
also be affected.
SOLUTION:
Update to version 4.51, which mitigates the vulnerability via the
"/GS" flag. An exploitation attempt will still result in a process
termination.
Do not connect to untrusted POP3 servers.
