    Bart,

The market analysts listed below are responsible for tracking the market
penetration and creditability of commercial IDS products. They base their
analysis on product revenue and customer interviews. Based on the most
recent reports by IDC and Frost & Sullivan, top dogs include Cisco, ISS, and
Symantec/Axent. All others are usually lumped together below.

Many sources of this type of information usually include heavy spin.
Reliable sources of market data can be retrieved from the market research
firms such as IDC (www.idc.com), Yankee (www.yankee.com), Frost & Sullivan
(www.frost.com), Gartner, Forrester, Tully, etc. These are great places to
find the information you are looking for.

Thanks (especially JCL), and now another question (I should have asked it
the first time): What are the major top-3 players in the commercial IDS
    arena?

I did some research myself and wonder if anyone could correct it (no. 1
being the best: making the most sales):

    1) Internet Security Systems with ISS RealSecure
    3) NFR Security with Network Flight Recorder IDS + LRD

Can you also comment on it; which is technically most sophisticated? Any
experience on it? Actually, I'm looking for info similar to
    http://www.gocsi.com/roundtable.htm but only more recent.

    TIA
    Bart
