    I think he meant a "spanned" port, at least it fits Cisco terminology on
    higher-end Catalysts (the IOS-based XL series has another term I
    think). You can specify that traffic on one port, or VLan, be copied to
    a specified destination port. You can then attach a sniffer or IDS
    device to that port. Just avoids re-plumbing it through a hub and the
    associated half-duplex issues to accomplish the same thing.
