I agree, up to a point, but some of your premises are wrong:

You are jumping into a classical confusion between the language-java and the
JVM. Java can also be compiled to platform-specific code ;) and JIT
compilers are remarkably efficient at optimizing the bytecode only once at
program startup.
Actually, probably writing in C++ is still better for performance, however
this bond is not as ineliminable as it seems.

There are no functionalities actually lacking in java.
