Not knowing exactly what distribution/version you're running, you're likely
running a 2.2 Linux kernel. This comes with ipchains (man ipchains), that
acts as filter (firewall) for TCP/UDP/ICMP traffic. Yes, this can be
enabled on a single machine.
You can easily isolate yourself from the rest of the network, so expect some
time to learn how to set it up.
