Usually the reason the box slows down when using the HD is because the user
and/or linux distro has not used some of the optimizations allowed by hdparm
(comes with many linuxes)...
I have noticed large improvements in performance when using IDE disks
there...(It is annoying when doing a large copy and you cant even type at
the keyboard because the box is so unresponsive)
(I use -u1 -d1 -c1 options, but check the manpage because some of those can
cause problems on some systems)
