Well, given that lpd has been a chronic source of problems, I think the
best you can do is limit access to lpd to trusted machines, where you
trust the operators of those computers to use your lpd properly. If you
have a hostile environment, I wouldn't suggest using lpd.
However, if it is feasible for you to restrict access to lpd to trusted
hosts, you can configure lpd to accept connections only from those hosts
using the lpd.conf file (see the lpd.conf(5) manpage) and host-based
firewalls (iptables for linux kernel 2.4.x, I think).
