Apparently there was a umask problem in some earlier 2.4.x kernels, said
problem responsible for, among other things, world writable pid files in
/var/run.
I know this was fixed before 2.4.11, I just don't know when, and since I've
been reluctant to use a beta release of XFS code (last official release being
XFS 1.0.1 on kernel 2.4.5), I finally bit the bullet and decided to try 2.4.11
with the XFS patch, and hope that the umask problem was resolved.
I'm happy to report that kernel 2.4.11 with the xfs-2.4.11 patch shows no
apparent problems with this issue.
