Subject: Re: NT server, Service packs, Exchange, SQL Serverand the option pack -- in what order????

There are several issues created by SP4 that are finally addressed in SP6.
One of which is RAS related. Registry changes in SP4 cause clients to time
out much faster during connects and the Ras server would stop responding to
new connection attempts after applying SP4 (SP5 did nothing to help).

Q246467 is a description and solution (New kernel) for most of the problem

There is also a new NDISWAN fix but I do not have the "Q" number for it. It
was supposed to be a post SP6 hotfix. NDISWAN is responsible for the
resource management of the Ras ports. Under SP4-5, it was not releasing the
resources at call termination so your RAS server would run out of resources
and hang.

Well if there are Sp's i think they shuld be used!! i had no problems with
sp5, but sp6 had leaded me to several memory dumps so, it depends of the
machine! i think you shuld try sp6 if something goes rong then go back um
sp's thill one that seems stable!

sorry my inglish but i'm Portuguese!! hehe still learning to manage my

All,

I'm preparing a home NT server and have a pre-msce question: The
Microsoft website and the option pack install recommend that you
install SP3 and then the Option Pack. Then you are free to move to
other service packs as dependencies require. Here is the list of
items I'm putting on the server:

1) Base install is NT SP1
2) IIS 4.0 with FrontPage extensions
3) SQL Server
4) Exchange 5.5
5) Conseal Firewall
6) I'm also planning on adding PGP/NET VPN server - I might split
this off to a separate server.
7) NT services for Unix
8) Visual Suite of Visual Basic and C++ 6
9) JDK from Sun
10) Remote Routing and Access Service
11) Site Server Express

I'll be running the following services:

1) WINS
2) DNS
3) RAS

What order should I load the SP's and programs (Ex. SQL Server Before
Option Pack then Exchange?) for maximum stability? Several friends
have been giving me conflicting information: Some say stopping at SP3
is a must while others say they had no problems just going straight
to Sp6a, installing the Option pack, and re-installing SP6a then the
MDAC.

BTW, this is a home,"For Fun and Training" server and NOT a
production server so I'm not too worried about server load. The base
server has an AMD k6/2 with 192MB of memory and a 13GB & a 5GB IDE
hard drive.

Your recommendations, Hints, or RTFM's (which FM?) would be most
welcome!
