not completely true. You can change a registry key on the workstation that
makes the hidden shares visible. Does anyone know what this key is? I have
used systems config'ed like this in the past, but haven't ever done the
config changes.

No, that is why they are called hidden shares; you can't see them or
(attempt to) access them unless you know of their existence. If you want
them listed in explorer you will have to unhide them by removing the $ from
their names.
