Subject: [FOCUS-MS] computer does not show up in Network Neighborhood
I need help on the following question, I have searched the archives and have
been unable to find an answer. I would appreciate any help you can offer me
or if you can point me to the right location in the archives that would be
great too.
I have a two NT domains, DOMAINA has a two way trust with DOMAINB. I am an
administrator of DOMAINA and not of DOMAINB. DOMAINB is set up so that no
user machines show up in Network Neighborhood (I am also not sure how to do
that). DOMAINA is set up so that all machines show up in Network
Neighborhood. After logging onto DOMAINB from a machine in DOMAINA then
logging back onto DOMAINA, the machine is no longer visible from other
machines in DOMAINA. I can map a drive to the machine by typing in its
name, but it does not show up in the browser list. I have run across this
problem several times before and have never really been able to solve it. I
think it has something to do with the Computer Browser service, but it is
running and seems fine. Another problem that occurred after logging onto
DOMAINB is that at the NT logon screen the username is cleared. It is a
setting of DOMAINB that this be cleared but not of DOMAINA. I know that it
is just a simple registry setting to fix this, so I assume the case would be
the same for the first problem. If anyone could point me to the registry
setting or any other change I need to make to make the machine visible from
DOMAINA I would really appreciate it.
I realize that many of you may feel that hiding user workstations from
Network Neighborhood and clearing the username at logon are better security
practices than what I am trying to implement. I must admit that I don't
totally disagree with you. However the security of the issue is not my
present problem (I have already talked about those issues until I was blue
in the face with my managers). Therefore please only respond only with
solutions to the problem and not opinions about security of the issue.
Thanks in advance.
Deanna
