If you install the NT client agent from the Arcserve CD on the servers you are attempting to back up, you can shut down as many shares, services, and ports as you like. All you need is port 6050 open, can even back up through a firewall using that single port. You will also need to add them as client agents in the Arcserve manager.

Arcserve is the most difficult product I have ever used to find information on how to use it properly. Their support site rarely returns useful information.
