On a Win9X machine, when file and print sharing (each selected separately if
desired) is turned on, drives, folders, files are not accessible unless you
specifically share them using windows explorer, my computer, etc. Access to
the shared resources are further controlled by read/write access or
determination by passwords in the sharing properties.

Subject: Win 9X File and Print Sharing

    All,

Currently File and Print Sharing is turned off by default on all our Win9X
laptops with authenticate to a NT 4.0 Domain. However, our new anti-virus
solution requires that it be turned on. Upgrading is unfortunately not a
solution, so what are the implications of turning File and Print Sharing on,
and how do we negate them?
