The above is correct.
However, with XPSP2 RC1 or RC2, if you uninstall the Service Pack (so reverting to your previous SP and patches), when attempting to use Windows Update, you are still redirected to the v5 version of WindowsUpdate.
Furthermore, trying to force the v4 version causes a redirect to v5.
This means that the Windows Update automated scan then fails to correctly identify missing patches etc. on the SP1 machine.
Surely, if uninstalling SP2, the machine should be 'downgraded' to use v4 of Windows Update as well?
Has anyone else seem this problem and if so, have you overcome it?
