Can anyone point me to some information about salting keys, some algorithm descriptions etc.

Also the only thing that makes no sense to me is that if all the security of salting algorithms relies on them being secret, would it not be easy to reverse engineer the application to break it. If so then how much security does salting really add? Am I missing something?
