Tony,

Most of our Sun's are on Solaris 2.6, a few still on 2.5.1, and a
couple on 2.7. We are seriously looking at moving everything we can to
Solaris 2.8. There are several reasons for this, but among them are: 1)
Solaris 2.8 (and 2.7) are 64 bit, 2) improved detection of failing
components and hot-swapping of those components, 3) "live" patching, 4)
faster bootup (finally), 5) performance improvements and new performance
tools.

It is my understanding that a lot of Sun shops have kinda ignored 2.7,
but are looking at 2.8. Any others have thoughts on this???

Also, we (as I'm sure many others) do not install the first release of
any OS. I heard that there was going to be a 6/00 release of Solaris 2.8.
Anybody (especially any of the Sun folks on the list) who can confirm /
deny this???

Over and above Solaris ? For what reasons out of interest ? I have heard
that the OpenBSD Group are extremely fast to respond to issues like bugs
and newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Also what does the list think of Solaris 8 ? Is it worth an all 2.6 shop
even investigating..? Personaly I let sleeping dogs lie but others here
are champing at the bit to try it out.

Cheers, Tony
