i think it's not that good an idea to use hardware compression.

why?
if your tape drive crashes, you won't be able to read the tapes on any other
drive except Sony DDS4 SDT-10000 drives.
    imagine your tape drive crashing in three years from now: it won't be
that appealing to buy a tape drive with a capacity like three years ago, but
you'll have to. and until you found an opportunity to buy such a device, you
possibly won't be able to find a colleague who has the same drive to help
you out if you need to have access to your backups.
