Here's the rest of the story:
The representatives I spoke with at Egsoft had no idea where this item might
be coming from because it did not fit their current 'cookie profile'.
I also took to heart the suggestions from you all that somehow this was
related to WebTrends.
I looked at some of the links from you all (Thanks again) and found that
indeed there _is_ a link between egsoft and WebTrends. However, a search of
the Webtrends site for the single word 'egsoft' returns -- NOTHING ! Smae
with egsoft's site.
I looked on our server this morning and found an installation of the
WebTrends IIS plug in extension. There, in the 'readme' file was data on the
registry entries for the product. We installed webtrends, but overlooked the
fact that we installed these extensions as well at the time we genned up the
server. (our bad...)
The default value for the cookie name is 'egsoft'.(!)
By removing the value, though not the key, cookies are no longer placed on
the visitors machine.
