TITLE: Potential Security setgid problem with locale message files
                (Compaq Case ID: SSRT0689U)
       x-ref: SGI CORE-090400, CVE# CAN2000-0844), potential locale
       format vulnerability.
   Date: 18-DEC-2000

"Compaq is broadly distributing this Security Advisory in order
to bring to the attention of users of Compaq products the
important security information contained in this Advisory.

  IMPACT:

  Versions Affected: Compaq's Tru64 UNIX V4.0D, V4.0F, V4.0G
                      Compaq's Tru64 UNIX V5.0, V5.0a,
Fix Shipped in the latest patch kit for V5.1
(BL1)

For all other versions Compaq strongly recommends you upgrade to a
minimum of V4.0D and obtain the necessary patch.

A potential security vulnerability has been discovered, where under
certain circumstances, system privilege may be compromised within a
  group.

  SEVERITY: Medium

  PROBLEM SYMPTOM:

In many implementations of locale message support a problem has
been
reported where checks are not made for setgid programs in the
message
catalog code using NLSPATH environmental variable.

Note: Compaq's TRU64 UNIX does not use NLSPATH environmental
variable if the program file is setuid root, or the current

working
directory if the user is the root user and/or the message
catalog is
        setuid root.

  SOLUTION:

Compaq Tru64 UNIX engineering has provided a fix for this potential
problem for all supported versions of the software. We apologize
that
this fix is not available from our patch site. If you determine
that you
need this fix please contact your normal Compaq Services support
channel
and request a patch using the reference SSRT0689U.

Compaq appreciates your cooperation and patience. We regret any
inconvenience applying this information may cause.

As always, Compaq urges you to periodically review your system
management and security procedures. Compaq will continue to
review and enhance the security features of its products and work
with customers to maintain and improve the security and integrity
  of their systems.
