Too bad BlueBoar didn't tell me that I missed something important :-)
My post stands as written as to the extant details, but the lack of
the %n description obviously makes a big difference. I'd not looked at
my ANSI C spec in a long time and had simply forgotten about it, and
it's A Big Hairy Deal.
I'm glad I never said "It's impossible" :-)
