                              SGI Security Advisory

            Title: netstat vulnerability
            Number: 20020503-01-I
            Date: May 7, 2002
            Reference: CAN-2002-0355
    _____________________________________________________________________________

    - -----------------------
    - --- Issue Specifics ---
    - -----------------------

It's been reported that /usr/etc/netstat allows detection of whether or not
a file exists, even when the permissions and ownership of that file should
    not allow it.

SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for
neutralizing the exposure. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be
implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems.

These issues have been corrected in IRIX 6.5.12 and later versions.

    - --------------
    - --- Impact ---
    - --------------

The /usr/etc/netstat binary is part of the IRIX base system, and is
installed by default on all SGI machines.

The possible impact of this is that non-privileged users can detect if files
exist when they shouldn't be able to.

SGI is not aware of any specific exploits for this, but this ability could
conceivably be used for nefarious purposes.

This vulnerability may be not exploited by a remote user, a local account is
    required.

This vulnerability has been fixed in IRIX 6.5.12 and later versions.

This vulnerability was assigned the following CVE:
    http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2002-0355

    - ----------------------------
    - --- Temporary Workaround ---
    - ----------------------------

There is no effective workaround for this vulnerability.

SGI recommends upgrading to IRIX 6.5.12 or a later version.

    - ----------------
    - --- Solution ---
    - ----------------

SGI has not provided patches for this vulnerability. Our recommendation is
to upgrade to IRIX 6.5.12 or a later version.
