FTPPro has become aware that some consumers may be concerned with the
methods we use for on-line registration. In order to allay any fears, this
letter shall provide a brief description of the methods which shall be used
in FTPPro Version 7.6, which is scheduled for release on 2/10/2000.
FTPPro serializes its software during the installation of the product, and
this is done on-line. This allows each package to contain a unique serial
number which can be used to register the software (either at installation,
or after evaluation). Basic user information, such as email address, is
transmitted during this process.
We have been aware for some time that modified copies of our software exist
on the Internet. These modified versions have caused us, and consumers,
problems during the serialization process. Simply put, these modified
versions attempt to use an invalid serial number, and therefore cannot be
registered.
FTPPro previously contained a feature which allowed us to send email to the
users of illegally modified copies of FTPPro. We have chosen to remove that
feature from FTPPro. The new version will only transmit information which
the user has typed onto the OnLine Registration form.
FTPPro has never gleaned any Passwords. A Password was never required for us
to send an Email message to the warez users.
Although our previous policy was clearly disclosed in the FTPPro User
Agreement, and we only sent Email to the warez users after they had
submitted numerous invalid registrations, we have still decided that the new
policy is in the best interest of our users.
Therefore, FTPPro will no longer have the ability to send Email to any user.
What these modified warez versions do is now beyond our control. Should
anyone encounter a version which does anything other than what we have
described in this letter, we would encourage you to contact us immediately.
We encourage people to try our software, and recommend that you download
Version 7.6 from our web page, when it is released on 2/10/2000.
Thank you,
Sabine Schmidt
