It is generally (in my experience) considered bad form to post to
mailing lists as postmaster. Mail FROM "postmaster" is generally a
report of some mail delivery problem, and is often filtered into mail
folders specifically for the purpose of identifying problems with the
mail system by system administrators and/or mail administrators --
i.e. the type of people most likely to be subscribed to this list.
Often these messages will be considered of high priority, as they may
be an indication of a problem.
The intended purpose of the postmaster account is for outside parties
to be able to be certain they can send mail TO postmaster, in order to
contact someone who is guaranteed to be a real person at a given site,
primarily with regard to e-mail. According to RFC 822:
"It often is necessary to send mail to a site, without knowing
any of its valid addresses. For example, there may be mail system
dysfunctions, or a user may wish to find out a person's correct
address, at that site.
"This standard specifies a single, reserved mailbox address
(local-part) which is to be valid at each site. Mail sent to
that address is to be routed to a person responsible for the
site's mail system or to a person with responsibility for general
site operation. The name of the reserved local-part address is:
Postmaster
so that "Postmaster
domain" is required to be valid."
It is generally considered proper and preferable for the manager of
the mail system to have their own personal e-mail address,
e.g. geo
getinfo.org, and then have postmaster "routed" to them via
mail alias or similar mechanism.
I would appreciate it if you would not post as postmaster in the
future.
My sincere thanks
